For the crisis in Mali having caused the debacle of President Ibrahima Boubacar Keita aka IBK, democratically re-elected for a second term, France is raising the tone and this time it is President Emmanuel Macron himself who is speaking.

France and its partners are committed in Mali and in the region for the safety of the Sahelian populations and at the request of the Sahelian States. This is the meaning of the Coalition for the Sahel which was set up at the summit of Pau.

The fight against terrorist groups and the defense of democracy and the rule of law are inseparable. To get out of it is to cause instability and weaken our struggle. It’s not acceptable.

In Mali, power must be returned to civilians and milestones must be laid for the return to constitutional order. President Keïta, his prime minister and members of the government must be released without delay and their safety guaranteed.

France and the European Union are alongside ECOWAS and the African Union to find a solution to the Malian crisis. Peace, stability and democracy are our priority.
We are extremely attentive to the safety of our nationals in Mali. I asked the Defense Council this morning to do everything in this direction ”.
