Counterattack is not a Hollywood movie. It’s moving slowly

Progress on the battlefield in Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russian-controlled territory is slower than desired, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Weeks after the start of the counteroffensive, Zelensky acknowledged that some people have unrealistic expectations, thinking it is like a Hollywood movie with immediate results. However, he emphasized that the lives of people are at stake in this conflict.

Ukraine has announced that it has regained control of eight villages in the regions of Zaporizhia and Donetsk. Zelensky explained that the slow progress is due to the extensive mining of Ukrainian territory by Russian forces, covering an area of 200,000 square kilometers (77,220 square miles).

Despite pressure and various opinions, Zelensky stated that Ukraine will proceed on the battlefield in the way they believe is best. He reiterated the need for Ukraine to be given security guarantees by NATO, with the ultimate goal of joining the military alliance.

When asked about the end of the war and the possibility of negotiations with Russia, Zelensky made it clear that victories on the battlefield are necessary. He emphasized that Ukraine will never sit at the negotiation table as long as Russia remains on Ukrainian territory. Zelensky expressed his refusal to accept a frozen conflict, stating that it offers no perspective for Ukraine.

Regarding concerns about the installation of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Zelensky acknowledged that Putin has been a danger to Ukraine since 2014 when Russia seized the first Ukrainian territories. However, he expressed doubt that Putin would actually use nuclear weapons, suggesting that the Russian president is afraid for his own life. Zelensky criticized Putin’s actions, describing them as launching a full-scale war against a neighboring country in the 21st century.

Zelensky also addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s derogatory comments about him being “a shame for the Jewish people.” Visibly troubled and taken by surprise, Zelensky stated that he did not know how to comment on Putin’s words. He highlighted his personal connection to the Holocaust, having lost many relatives, including his grandfather. Zelensky condemned Putin’s comment, comparing him to the second king of anti-Semitism after Hitler. He emphasized that such language is unacceptable from the president of any country and expressed gratitude for the support he received in response to Putin’s remarks.
