Councilors want inquiry into toppled monument – 2024-02-22 15:48:22

They want a consultation on the Monument to the Soviet Army

Municipal councilors from the BSP, “Vazrazhdane” and “There is such a people” (ITN) want to hold a referendum on the Monument to the Soviet Army in the capital, the three parties said at a briefing in the Capital Municipal Council (SOC).

Ivan Takov from the BSP said that he supports the report on the referendum. Colleagues from “Vazrazhdane” wrote it down in its entirety, ITN said that they always support the referendum, Takov pointed out. According to him, this will be the first test for the mayor and the other groups in SOS whether they really want the voice of the citizens of Sofia to be heard. Takov recalled that more than two months ago they submitted the report for a referendum on restoring the Monument to the Soviet Army and keeping it in the same place. We are starting consultations with the remaining political groups for the adoption of this report through committees in the SOS, Takov announced.

Deyan Nikolov from “Vazrazhdane” stated that the monument fell victim to political intrigues in Sofia. We have the opportunity to hear what the citizens think, he pointed out. According to him, the imposition of the political will of one or another political party should be stopped. Nikolov is sure that the people of Sofia want the monument to be restored where it was. According to him, this is also shown by the results of leaflet surveys conducted by “Vazrazhdane”.

Plamen Danailov from ITN also stated that he supports a referendum, but stressed that they have a different proposal for what should be in place of the monument. In principle, ITN agrees to have referendums on important issues for the people of Sofia. Danailov asked whose account the costs of returning the monument would be and who would take responsibility for it
