Corruption scandal in Mexico: Videos show the President’s brother receiving bags of money

At the beginning of the week, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the corruption in his country. Days later, recordings surfaced that put him in danger himself.

  • Two videos show Pío López Obrador receiving cash in paper bags from a high-ranking official in 2015.
  • He is the brother of the incumbent President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
  • Just a few days ago, the president made corruption allegations against three predecessors.

In the midst of a corruption scandal involving several ex-presidents, two videos in Mexico made the current incumbent Andrés Manuel López Obrador difficult to explain. The footage shows how his brother Pío received cash in paper bags from a now high-ranking government official in 2015. They were published on Thursday evening (local time) on the anti-government news portal “Latinus”. The origin is unclear. In total, it should be 1.4 million pesos (around 58,000 francs).

The officer, David León, was head of the national civil protection agency. He was recently appointed as the anti-corruption officer for drug purchases. He will not take up the post until his situation is resolved, he tweeted. León confirmed the authenticity of the videos. He said he raised money for the current president’s movement. Pío López Obrador worked for his brother in the ultimately successful election campaign.

The videos are to be handed over to the judiciary

The president described the publication on Friday as a reaction of his political opponents to corruption allegations. “I see this as a normal, legitimate reaction of those whose interests are affected by our decision to put an end to corruption in the country,” said the left-wing populist. The money was donations for his movement. He called on “Latinus” to hand over the videos to the public prosecutor.

In Mexico, a scandal about the ex-boss of the state oil company Pemex, Emilio Lozoya, is making headlines. Lozoya had been extradited from Spain on suspicion of bribery. He then raised allegations of corruption against three of López Obrador’s predecessors and other politicians. In connection with this, a video of employees of opposition politicians with bundles of money was also published. López Obrador presented it on Tuesday as evidence of corruption in previous governments.
