Corps Command of the American Rochester resigns after death of black arrestee | NOW

The full force command of Rochester, New York, resigned on Tuesday because of the death of a black man after his arrest in March. Daniel Prude passed out during his arrest and died a week later.

Mayor Lovely Warren announced the resignation of the police force at a press conference, reports ABC News. earlier called Warren’s arrest of 41-year-old Prude was already a racist act.

Police Commissioner La’Ron Singletary said in a statement that he is stepping down over criticism of the internal investigation he led after Prude’s death on March 23. According to Singletary, other people try to damage his character and integrity. The Rochester Police Department chief worked there for over twenty years. His adjutant Joseph Morabit also resigned.

As far as is known, no police officers from the force left.

Man got anti-spit cap on

A week ago, Prude’s family released footage taken with the officers’ bodycams during the fatal arrest. These videos show officers approaching Prude after his brother called the police. Confused, Prude spits at the officers, who then put on an anti-spit cap and press him to the ground. He lost consciousness and stopped breathing. The man later died in hospital.

Seven police officers were suspended earlier this month for their involvement in the arrest. The New York State Attorney’s Office goes one grand jury establish to determine whether the officers should be prosecuted.

Survivors are angry with the police, because the footage of the arrest was only released two months after Prude’s death. They speak of a cover-up. Prude’s death sparked massive demonstrations in the United States.
