CORPAMAG starts reforestation maintenance work on 70 hectares of Caño Martinique – Opinion Caribe

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Magdalena CORPAMAG, as part of the works for the recovery of the southwestern sector of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta and the environmental restoration of the Caño Martinique, has started the maintenance works of the reforestation of 70 hectares of this stretch of water, located between the municipalities of Remolino, Sitio Nuevo and Pivijay.

The project, which has been socialized to the community, seeks to support 23,199 trees established on both banks of the Caño Martinique, of the species balso, bonga, shrimp, campano, yellow ceiba among others; replace the plant material of those that have not survived and carry out the silvicultural activities necessary for its conservation, which have a significant contribution to environmental restoration and the recovery of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta ecosystem.

Despite the good adaptation of the trees planted, it is important to ensure their survival in a dry forest ecosystem where drought and soil conditions are factors that prevent the easy development of the natural succession of plants, contributing to the provision of multiple ecosystem services in terms of connectivity, sequestration of carbon and habitat for fauna. The generation of these ecological corridors on the banks of the Martinique channel is important for the life of the wildlife that move through these areas.

It is important to note that the Martinique canal connects with the Renegade canal and supplies important marshy complexes of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta ecosystem.

“With these tasks, what the Corporation seeks is to generate sustainability for these important projects that help us with the environmental and ecosystem recovery of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta,” assured engineer Karen Forero Bula, deputy technical director of Corpamag.

The project also includes maintenance for seven months, which will be carried out in two periods and each of them will have a fertilization phase, as well as all activities related to cleaning, laying, replanting and phytosanitary control.
