Coronavirus: what are screening drives?

the essential
Faced with the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, screening drives have been developing all over France in recent days.

For several days, many medical analysis laboratories have offered to take samples from their car parks, using the principle of “drives”.

How do drives work?

The whole procedure is well organized. First of all, the patient must necessarily obtain a medical prescription from a doctor, who will judge, using a grid of indications developed by the ARS, whether it is necessary to prescribe screening. Then the patient can make an appointment with the laboratory.

The patient should generally present himself with a mask. Biologists, wearing blouses, charlottes, protective glasses and gloves, are waiting for him in the parking lot. The patient undergoes the sample through the open window, without getting out of the car, using a swab slipped into his nose. The samples are then analyzed on site or in a nearby laboratory.

Who are they aimed at?

Screening tests are not available to everyone, however. They are only reserved for health professionals, on the front line in the war against the virus, who show signs of the disease (fever, cough, …). But also to people “at risk”, in other words pregnant women, immunocompromised, people with respiratory insufficiency, or people who have severe obesity.

What is the point ?

The advantage of this device is to limit contact between people. The patient does not enter the laboratory and therefore there is no need to clean every room where the infected person has passed.
