Coronavirus: walk-in centers “ to face winter ”

A network of walk-in coronavirus testing centers is to be set up across England in an attempt to persuade more people to come for testing.

Several hundred walk-in units will be operational by the end of October, in time for winter, when cases could start to increase.

They will complement existing drive-thru service centers, mobile test units and door-to-door ordering.

It comes amid the worry that people still won’t show up for testing.

How does contact tracing work in England? What happened to the NHS contact tracing app?

The government’s weekly randomized test of 30,000 people, conducted by the Bureau of National Statistics, suggests that there are about 1,700 new infections per day.

But the test service only recovers about a third.

Part of that will be due to people not showing symptoms when infected, but NHS testing and tracing officials have said they want to see more people show up for the test.

Local viral hotspots

Meanwhile, Public Health England released its weekly report on local infection rates.

It shows that Blackburn had the most positive cases per 100,000 people over the past week at nearly 80 – as the BBC reported earlier this week.

Leicester, which was placed under local lockdown earlier in the month, has seen cases plummet.

Additional measures were introduced in Blackburn, including stricter guidelines on household mixing.

But a full local lockdown is not yet planned.

Luton has also been designated a zone of intervention alongside Leicester and Blackburn.

This means that some of the nationwide loosened restrictions from this weekend, including the reopening of gyms, will no longer occur there.

The other top 10 estates are Kirklees, Sandwell, Rotherham and Bradford.

These are all closely monitored, with local public health teams encouraging those who have been in close contact with confirmed cases to self-isolate.

Signs of improvement in contact tracing

Overall, there are signs that the contact tracing service – NHS Test and Trace – is starting to improve on some measures.

About 80% of people who tested positive in the past week provided details of close contact.

Of those close contacts provided, 78% were reached and asked to self-isolate, up from 72% last week.

Baroness Harding, responsible for testing and monitoring the NHS, said she was pleased with the performance.

But she said the “most important lever” in keeping the virus at bay was to get more people to come forward for testing, which is why a network of walk-in centers has been created.

“NHS Test and Trace relies on everyone playing their part,” she said.

“We all need to get tested if we have symptoms, share our contact details if we test positive, and self-isolate when asked. ”

Baroness Harding said that at the end of October, no one in urban areas should be more than a 30-minute walk from one of the new walk-in centers, which have been tested in a handful of places in recent weeks.

And test processing capacity is also increased, with the opening of a new mega-lab in Newport, Gwent.

The ambition is that by the end of October 500,000 tests per day can be processed.

Currently, the figure is just over 300,000.
