Coronavirus | The WHO estimates that the COVID-19 pandemic will be controlled in less than two years

The CEO of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, calculated that the pandemic of the COVID-19 will last “less than two years” and that it will be less long-lived than the Spanish flu of 1918, which caused tens of millions of deaths in two years.

“We hope to end this pandemic in less than two years. Above all, if we manage to unite our efforts (…) and we make the most of the available resources and hoping that we can have supplementary tools such as vaccines, I think we can end it with a shorter period than the 1918 flu, ”he said at a press conference.

The WHO director pointed out that the arrival of a possible vaccine against COVID-19 “It will not end the pandemic by itself”, although he pointed out that “There is no guarantee that we will have it (the vaccine).”

“No country will be able to solve this problem on its own until we have the vaccine, which it would be a vital tool and we hope to have it as soon as possible”, He remarked.

The doctor urged all countries to “Learn to control and manage this virus using current tools”, and to “make the adjustments in daily life that are necessary to stay safe.”

In that sense, he reiterated that it is necessary to learn to live with the virus, since the confinements “They are not a long-term solution for any country.”

“We must not choose between health and the economy, it is a false choice. Unlike, the COVID-19 pandemic reminds us that health and the economy are inseparable”, He sentenced.

At another point, Tedros Adhanom referred to the sprouts of the COVID-19 that some countries are suffering: “Several countries are now facing new outbreaks after a long period of almost no transmission. These countries draw attention to others that are now seeing a reduction in the number of cases. Progress does not mean victory. Early detection of outbreaks is vital to avoid community transmission”. (AFP / Europa Press)
