However, this is not enough for Marco Chiesa (45), the SVP Council of States member of Ticino. “It cannot be that Lombardy massively limits mobility and that Ticino continues to let 70,000 cross-border commuters cross the border every day,” he says to BLICK. “Something is wrong here.”
–
SVP-Chiesa only wants «strategic staff»
He therefore demands a massive restriction to a few thousand cross-border commuters. «We can only let strategic staff into Ticino that we absolutely need on site – for example doctors and nursing staff. Or at most company bosses. »
–
That must now be clearly defined by the canton and the federal government. “Everyone else has to stay at home and do their work in the home office if possible,” says Chiesa. “Fortunately, many companies are already moving in this direction.”
–
Health before economy
The SVP Council of States is aware that the Ticino economy would suffer under such a strict regime. “There are two important goods at stake: the economy and health,” says Chiesa. «In this case, the health of the Ticino population is more important to me. We have to do everything we can to stem the corona virus. ”
–
And he has another idea: “We have to provide accommodation for the health workers we work with so that they can stay in Switzerland for several weeks in an emergency.”
–
Chiesa fears that if the corona epidemic spreads, the Italian government may order Italian health workers – there are around 4,000 people – to Italy. “In this case, we have to be prepared,” he says, because: “Italy is currently in chaos. Everything is possible there. »
–
Chiesa thinks about advances
The spring session in Bern continues on Monday, unless it is interrupted or even canceled. Then Chiesa wants to sit with his Ticino SP council member Marina Carobbio Guscetti (53) to discuss joint proposals.
–
For him it is clear: «We have to largely close the border with Italy. That is the only sensible way. » And one also has to think about “how we can make ourselves less dependent on foreign workers in the future”.
–
Greens-Gysin warns of closure
The green Ticino national councilor Greta Gysin (36), on the other hand, says: “A total closure of the borders does not protect us from the virus that is already there.” Blocking the border would instead “bring our economic system to its knees”.
–
Because 30 percent of employees are cross-border commuters. And it makes it clear: “Closure would be very problematic for the Ticino health system, where around 4,000 cross-border commuters work.”
–
She also doesn’t approve of Chiesa’s suggestion that only really necessary cross-border commuters be allowed into the canton. “No, that would not be feasible,” she says. And adds: «Unfortunately, it is not surprising that the SVP tries to create a mood even in an emergency. This will not help against the spread of the virus. Corona is already there! »
–
In addition, one should not forget that the first infected people in Ticino and Switzerland “were not infected by cross-border commuters, but were in northern Italy themselves”.
