The mayor also regretted that some people did not abide by the eight-hour curfew and other restrictive measures imposed in Quito. “Unfortunately we are not understanding the serious danger to which we are exposed as a city,” he tweeted.

On Saturday “crowding of people was found” in prohibited spaces in the capital of Ecuador, the local Special Operations Committee in charge of the coronavirus health emergency said Sunday.

With some 54,500 cases, including more than 4,400 deathsEcuador, with 17.5 million inhabitants, is one of the countries hardest hit by Covid-19 in Latin America. According to the authorities, there were also 3,054 possible deaths from coronavirus.

In mid-May, Ecuador began to ease the confinement decreed to stop the pandemic through a traffic light that establishes the level of danger, in which the red color contemplates the harshest measures.

Quito turned yellow on June 3, but the capital authorities insist on the need to return to red -which includes, among other measures, a nine-hour confinement daily-, after a 62% increase in cases between June 3 and 27.

The demand for intensive care units in the capital grew from 57 to 250 beds in the last month, according to figures from the Ministry of Health.

On Monday, 50% of public servants are expected to return to face-to-face work and the capacity of public transport is expanded from 30 to 50%, within the progressive return to activities.

Quito, the most populous city in Ecuador with 2.78 million inhabitants, is the second with the most cases of coronavirus in the country, behind Guayaquil, which reached 9,978 infected.

In the latter, the houses became morgues and the hospitals were overwhelmed by the avalanche of patients after the detection of the first case on February 29.
