LONDON (England) – The CEO of the German company BioNTech, Ugur Sahin, gave an interview to The Guardian after announcing last Monday that it had developed a vaccine against the coronavirus 90% effective together with Pfizer. Great optimism shown by the scientist on the progress made: “If the question is whether it is possible to end the pandemic with this vaccine, the answer is: yes. Also because even if the vaccine were to protect only symptomatic people it would still have ‘a dramatic effect’ on the epidemic“.

Pfizer, positive signs
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine according to Sahin will be able to attack the coronavirus on several fronts: “On the one hand, it prevents Covid-19 from entering our cells. And even if the virus were to break through this first barrier, the T lymphocytes would hit it in the head. We have trained the immune system very well to perfect these two defensive moves. We now know that the virus cannot defend itself against these mechanisms“. In reference to the effectiveness also on asymptomatic it could take up to a year. Regarding the duration of possible immunity, these are the words of Sahin: “So far we have only indirect clues. We can speculate that the immune response could last for about a year“.
