The study indicated a significant decrease in the intelligence of patients after suffering from COVID.
People who have suffered coronavirus disease, cognitive deficits are massively observed. This effect does not go away in patients even after recovery.
This is the conclusion reached by a team of British and American scientists. The results of their research are published on the journal’s website. The Lancet.
Scientists have long suspected that COVID-19 impairs cognitive performance in patients, along with other long-term COVID symptoms that can become chronic. There are studies that have identified neurological disorders in severely ill patients.
To test these concerns, scientists collected data from more than 81,000 people. From January to December 2020, participants in the study took the Great British Intelligence Test and provided data on the topic of COVID-19 – whether the disease was present and in what form it was transferred.
Researchers have compared data from healthy people with data from those who have suffered from the coronavirus in one form or another. At the same time, they tried to take into account all the accompanying factors, such as gender, age, educational level, general health and others.
The study indicated a significant decrease in intelligence after suffering from COVID. The most serious damage the coronavirus has inflicted on people who have had a severe form with the use of mechanical ventilation – their combined IQ score in the Great British Intelligence Test dropped to a level that roughly corresponds to seven points in traditional IQ tests.
At the same time, taking into account the available data, scientists believe that the level of intelligence does not recover over time, even after almost a year after recovery.
Experts note that the coronavirus has a comprehensive negative effect on human abilities – abstract thinking, logic, concentration. For a more complete understanding of the problem, scientists are calling for further research.

Postcopy syndrome
Scientists and doctors have repeatedly stated that the coronavirus has a long-term negative impact on human life, even after recovery. So-called “postcoid syndrome“can last more than 12 weeks from the onset of the disease.
Symptoms can manifest themselves from any system – respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous.
The most common are changes in the respiratory system. Quite often, these changes are subtotal as well as total in nature. Patients need auxiliary respiratory support for a long time, even when the virus in their body no longer multiplies, and the PCR test is negative. Complications in the form of myocarditis are somewhat less common.
In addition, neurological disorders and weakness are typical complications that persist for several weeks after the illness, even if the illness is mild. Cognitive disorders occur quite often: impaired memory, functions of the higher nervous system.
Scientists have previously found that coronavirus infection can provoke changes in the brain… That is why sick people often lose their sense of smell and taste.
