Coronavirus: patients with severe forms of the disease deficient in vitamin K?

Dutch scientists believe they have found a link between vitamin K deficiency and the contraction of the more severe forms of covid-19.

Dutch researchers studied 184 hospitalized patients with severe disease, and on the other hand a group of non-sick people.

They concluded that in its most severe forms, the coronavirus causes blood clotting and degradation of the elastic fibers located in the lungs. Vitamin K, which is found in certain foods, is essential for the production of proteins that regulate coagulation and can therefore protect against lung disease.

What foods are rich in vitamin K?

There are K1 or phylloquinone, of plant origin, and vitamin K2 or menaquinone, of animal, bacterial origin.

Vitamin K1 is found in almost everything that is green: spinach, broccoli, lettuce. Vitamin K2 is found in some cheeses or in natto, a Japanese food made from fermented soybeans.

In this study published in The Guardian, Dr. Rob Janssen who works on the study, encourages a healthy intake of vitamin K, except for those who take blood thinners. “Even if it doesn’t help with severe forms of Covid-19, vitamin K is good for your blood vessels, your bones and probably also your lungs,” he added.

Scientists now want to be able to do a clinical trial and are seeking funding.
