While in many countries containment lowers industrial production, Sony explains that, if sectors of its activity are down, the production of photo sensors should not be affected by the health crisis.

On March 27, Sony published an official statement explaining, in broad outline, activity by activity, how the Coronavirus had and was going to have an impact on the smooth running of the business. While we learn that the cinema activity of the Japanese firm is completely stopped, or that the calendars of the releases of games and musical albums are very disturbed, the sector of the photo sensors seems, for the moment, spared.
Indeed, the production of sensors has no delay, either their pure manufacture or that of the necessary components. The various Sony customers, manufacturers of smartphones or cameras can therefore breathe. However, regarding smartphone sensors, if the Covid-19 is not currently a problem, Sony, which in 2018 held more than 50% of the market share of the sector, still struggles to honor all its deliveries. As a reminder, due to demand, the Japanese group will open in 2021 a factory dedicated to photo sensors in Nagasaki.

For other Sony products, including cameras, the epidemic has forced the Asian giant to close a factory in Malaysia, and the flow of resources has become very unstable, which suggests delays in delivery. Delays accentuated by the blocking and closings of businesses around the world.
