Coronavirus: Lufthansa expects state aid talks to be “ended soon”

Now everything should go very quickly: The negotiations between Lufthansa and the German government about state aid for the ailing airline are apparently making progress. “In our opinion, these talks can be brought to an early conclusion,” wrote Lufthansa Board Member Carsten Spohr in a letter to the employees that came to light on Sunday.

The talks are “intensive and constructive,” it said. “The support from the German state would be a decisive step for our future viability.”

The Group Management Board made no statements regarding the form of the planned support. According to SPIEGEL information, the federal government is planning a direct entry into the ailing airline. The aid is said to amount to a total of around ten billion euros.

On Monday, the supervisory board wants to discuss the company’s economic situation and future options, the executive board continued. On Tuesday, he would then answer the shareholders’ questions at the general meeting. “All meetings, meetings, deliberations and committees are currently dealing with only one topic: securing our future,” the letter said.
