Coronavirus. Italy: new rules in schools – shorter lessons, face masks at the entrance

  • It has been ensured that 11 million masks will be delivered to all facilities in the country
  • Wearing masks will not be compulsory only when the student is seated at their desk
  • The 1 meter distance rule should be used in the staff room, in the canteen and at the snack and drink dispensers

It was also announced that every day all educational institutions in the country will receive a total of 11 million free masks; for children, adolescents and employees.

The principles of return to school have been agreed by the ministries of education and health together with the national institute of health and regional authorities on the basis of guidance from a scientific and technical committee advising the government on steps taken in relation to the pandemic.

It was decided that on September 1, retake courses for students who received unsatisfactory grades at the end of the school year may begin.

Students must wear face masks upon entry to school. This obligation also applies to teachers, janitors and all other employees.

The families will be responsible for taking the temperature of their children. Thermo scanners at the school door will not be required, although some schools have decided to equip themselves with them. If the student is above 37.5 degrees, he / she cannot enter the school.

Students will be able to remove their masks when they enter the classroom and sit on desks and if a distance of one meter is respected there. It will be counted from the center of one bench to the center of the next.

The use of a face mask is recommended as the student stands up and leaves his / her desk.

The delivery of over 2 million new single-seat benches ordered by the government in the form of ordinary tables or modern structures connected to the chair is to start on September 8 and last until the end of October.

The 1-meter distance rule should also be used in the staff room, in the canteen and at the snack and drink dispensers. In a gymnasium, this distance must be 2 meters.

Each school principal can decide on the mode of lessons, for example by introducing a 6-day working week or shortening the length of the lessons, which traditionally lasts 60 minutes.

In some smaller schools, the press reported, the possibility of arranging breaks between lessons in class or even in desks without going out into the corridor or courtyard is already being considered.

Only in high schools and technical colleges will it be possible to organize part of the lessons in remote mode, if necessary. Where possible, it was recommended to open after-school clubs. Each school will have a doctor responsible for health supervision.

School buses will also have to wear masks and social distancing. A distance of one meter will not only be necessary when the journey takes less than a quarter of an hour.

The next updated recommendations for schools are expected to be announced on August 29.
