Coronavirus in Poland. Prof. Krzysztof Simon about the epidemic, masks, politicians, weddings and parties

– Three months we have a row about these crazy weddings that were taking place. How many thousand people from these weddings ended up in hospitals? – asked professor Krzysztof Simon on TVN24, a Lower Silesian consultant in the field of infectious diseases. He pointed out that actions such as the appearance of politicians without masks in the situations and places where they should wear them “disorganizes a society that is rebellious anyway.”

During the last day, laboratory tests confirmed coronavirus infection in another 1,967 people – this is the highest daily increase in infections since the beginning of the epidemic in Poland. Another 30 people have died due to COVID-19, the Ministry of Health reported on Thursday.

“It completely disrupts the society that ours is rebellious anyway”

Professor Krzysztof Simon, a Lower Silesian consultant in the field of infectious diseases, said that he did not see the possibility of another lockdown because “we will have nothing to live on”. He added that the most important thing is to raise public awareness of the pandemic and the consistent actions of the authorities. – After all, what happened a few months ago – stories about these great victories over the epidemic – is absurd. Juggling these data depending on the elections – he said.

He recalled that orders to wear masks were issued, and then politicians could be seen without them at ceremonies. – This completely disorganizes a society that is rebellious and quite aggressive anyway. This is not only the specificity of Poland, because there are different groups – anti-vaccination movements, flat earth movements – explained the professor.

He stressed the importance of social solidarity with “the sick, the poor, the weaker and other people who may suffer”. – We don’t have places in two branches today. You have to open up the remaining units. There was no such need until a month ago, said Professor Simon. – These rules that are appearing now are rational, but with this amount of infections, if they are not respected by citizens and not enforced, they will lead to the fact that it will all be one big red zone and, like in Taiwan or Korea, will wear masks, keep distance. This is nothing unusual in the public space, as long as there is no vaccine, because the epidemic has unfortunately become permanent – he warned.

“What about masses? What about funerals?”

He estimated that the virus would spread “without convincing the public and absolutely fighting against the notions that there is no epidemic, that it is harmless, that it is a figment that influenza is more lethal.” “That’s not true,” emphasized Professor Simon.

– Three months we have a row about these crazy weddings that were taking place. How many thousand people from these weddings ended up in hospitals? he said. – Couldn’t it be reduced from the beginning? What about Masses? What about funerals where people were forced to push themselves? – He was asking.

He reminded that the source of infection can also be sports events in closed halls, where many young people come, who can then infect their grandparents or parents. – Society has to understand that yes, 70 percent will not get sick and will be fine, although they can transmit, but are responsible for the elderly and younger with multiple diseases. After all, we have young girls after leukemia or after organ transplants, for whom this course is catastrophic. It is different – he said.

– I will tell you some examples from the last two days. An argument, the patient took the mask off the doctor’s face because there was no epidemic, what she was doing and so on. I have a consultation at school that the family is fussing, that they do not agree to the daughter wearing the mask because there is no epidemic and she has some sort of inhalation allergy. Besides, the mask protects against allergies, which is absurd at all – said the professor. – You have to break through that there is an epidemic, it threatens not everyone, but the majority – he emphasized.

He also advised on what to do if people around us, e.g. on the bus, do not wear masks. – Since the cultural argument “please assume, because the state is threatening me” does not help and these people are so anti-social, so primitive when it comes to egocentric attitude and disregarding the needs of others, it is no longer democracy, it is anti-democracy, unfortunately you have to call the police or the municipal police and enforce it all – he said. – Otherwise we will not overcome the epidemic. How will the vaccines be available – no problem – he added.

“Flu mortality covers all groups, including young children”

He also referred to the issue of influenza vaccination. – It is a very sad thing that Poles did not vaccinate, it was impossible to convince them, but it was from the highest level that these voices about not vaccinating, which is a very sad behavior. People considered themselves healthy until they saw those individual people who died of the flu, ‘said Professor Simon.

Prof. Simon: If we follow the guidelines, we will reduce both the flu and COVIDTVN24

He added that flu, unlike COVID-19, can cause a catastrophe at any stage of life, not only in the elderly, such as inflammation of the heart muscle. “The mortality rate is four times lower than that of COVID-19, but it covers all groups, including young children, which we do not see in COVID,” he said.

He recalled that there are people who cannot be vaccinated and live only because others are vaccinated. – I hope many Poles will get wiser – he added.
