Coronavirus in Poland. Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski: three elements reduce the risk of infections by as much as 80 percent

The first decision I would make and enforce would be to protect myself in public, closed places with masks, hand hygiene and distance – said Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an immunologist and infection prevention specialist, in “Facts after Facts”. – If we can get rid of the threat with such simple methods, I do not understand why we do not enforce these measures in an absolutely unambiguous manner – he added. Dr. Joanna Heidtman, a psychologist and sociologist, assessed that “the habit of wearing masks has not been developed in us”.

The Ministry of Health released information on 512 cases of coronavirus infection in Poland on Wednesday. This is slightly more than on Tuesday, when the ministry reported 502 new infections. Since July 17, the number of active infections in the country has risen from 8,381 to 9,532, or almost 14 percent.

Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, when asked what should convince those who resigned from the restrictions, said that specific examples appeal to us the most.

– Two hairdressers in the United States worked for a week infected without knowing it, but because they were working in masks, the 140 people who passed through their salon during that time did not become infected. Another example – a nurse working in Poland infected, also asymptomatic, working in a mask. Dozens of people she cared for did not become infected due to the fact that she worked in a mask – he mentioned.

He added that these are probably the simplest, but at the same time the most vivid examples showing that the mask as a very simple tool allows you to get rid of this threat. – The fact that we forgot about it, in my opinion, is only due to communication problems – he assessed. He added that “sometime in May, however, this discipline was probably lifted and a strong message that the epidemic was actually defeated.”

– We managed, of course, thanks to quarantine and thanks to masks and distance in March and April, to properly stop the first wave of infections, but at the moment we know that this wave is returning, that there are more infections and there will be even more if we ignore the simplest safety rules – assessed an infection prevention specialist.

Dr. Grzesiowski: I would like the action “let’s put on masks, keep our distance”

Asked whether we are in danger of a return to severe restrictions and shutting down the economy, Grzesiowski said that this is a last resort that he cannot rule out.

– It would certainly not be my first decision if I were responsible for security in this country – he emphasized. He said that the first decision he would want to make and enforce is “to protect himself in public places closed with masks, that is hand hygiene and distance.” – These three elements reduce the risk of infection by as much as 80, and some people say it by as much as 90 percent – added Dr. Grzesiowski.

– If we can get rid of the threat with such simple methods, I do not understand why we do not enforce these measures in an absolutely unambiguous manner. The message is not strong at the moment – he assessed.

He added that he would like the media to feature the “let’s put on masks, let’s keep our distance” campaign, so that it would be a really strong movement, also from below. – That not only the authorities require these safeguards, but that we ourselves react if someone in our environment appears unsecured – he explained.

Dr. Heidtman: We haven’t made a habit of wearing masksTVN24

Psychologist: We haven’t developed a habit of wearing masks

Dr Joanna Heidtman, The psychologist and sociologist assessed that the restrictions were not entirely clear from the very beginning, so the desired habit of wearing masks was not developed in us. She added that there was a lot of discussion about wearing masks during closure. – Contrary to appearances, it is clear that to wear, what for and what. Nevertheless, it was already then, one could say, blurred – she said.

– People have been rebuking each other for some responsibility for others. Now they just got a bit helpless, because it’s hard to rebuke everyone in different places – she added.

She also said that the fact that fewer people wear masks is also influenced by ignorance. – Because the virus and everything related to it is so invisible (…), people very often see how others behave. If they see in their surroundings that no one is wearing (masks – ed.), Nobody, in quotation marks, cares, therefore, not knowing what to do, they do the same. Then it includes more and more masses – she added.
