Coronavirus in Peru | Concytec: learn about the 21 projects selected to combat COVID-19

He Concytec, through its executing agency, the Fondecyt, published this weekend the list of final results of the contest: “Special Projects: Modality – Emerging Needs at COVID-19 2020-02”, convened in response to the new demands caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus in Peru.

The call sought, in a short period of time, the application of initiatives capable of achieving results in the shortest possible time, through the presentation of concept notes for each project between May 27 and 31 last.

Despite the brevity of the schedules of the entire evaluation and selection process, 501 applications were initially received, of which 45 advanced to the second stage of the process.

In total, 21 proposals have been selected (click here to know the projects). Six of them correspond to the thematic area of ​​Epidemiology and Prevention, with initiatives that aim, for example, at the study of the disease in residents living at height, the symptomatic and asymptomatic transmission of the virus and the prevalence of post-infection pulmonary alteration.

The theme of Sanitary Accessories obtained five projects, among which stand out the self-sustaining medical oxygen concentrator and supplier equipment, the use of ultraviolet radiation to disinfect personal protective equipment and the creation of a special paint that could be applied in public places such as transport to reduce the period of permanence of the virus .

Both the Vaccines, Antigens and Antivirals areas –focused on the development and validation of these drugs– and the Social and Economic Research –studies on the consequences of the pandemic on the economy and society– obtained three projects each.

The selected initiatives, evaluated by a group made up of almost a hundred national and international specialists, come from universities (12), research institutes and civil society organizations (7) and private companies (2).

Each of the 21 winning projects will receive a grant of up to S / 350,000, totaling S / 5.5 million in financing.

This call is in addition to the one launched by the Concytec at the end of March 2020, “Special Projects: Response to COVID-19”, which promoted 29 projects for effective and rapidly developing solutions to the health challenges caused by the pandemic with grants totaling more than S / 6 million.
