Coronavirus symptoms: These signs require a test

Her neighbor only noticed days later that she also showed symptoms such as cough and fever. She also noticed the loss of her sense of smell and taste: a corona test was also positive.

Breast milk samples from the first woman remained negative. However, the test on the breast milk of the second woman, the mother who had become positive, was positive. After 14 days, the coronavirus was finally no longer detectable. Mother and child recovered from “Covid-19”. “Our study shows that Sars-CoV-2 can be detectable in breastfeeding women with acute infection in breast milk. But we still don’t know how often this is the case, whether the viruses in milk are also infectious and through breastfeeding can be transferred to infants, “says Jan Münch, professor at the” Institute for Molecular Virology “in Ulm.

First message from May 16, 2020: Pregnant women particularly at risk from coronavirus?

The spread of the coronavirus is to be combated with various measures, for example restrictions on going out or the general mask requirement for public transport (public transport) and shopping, which has been in force since April 27, 2020. At the heart of the measures is an attempt to protect especially risk groups from infection. But who exactly belongs to the risk group? Are pregnant women particularly at risk?

The obligation to wear a mask also applies to pregnant women in Bavaria. But are pregnant women particularly vulnerable and therefore belong to the risk group? And what should be considered when breastfeeding?

Coronavirus: What do pregnant women have to consider?

Basically, pregnant women do not seem to have an increased risk of developing a serious illness. This was confirmed by the “Healthy Living” network in a statement. BWhen infected with the novel coronavirus, pregnant women appear to develop fewer symptoms. Symptoms such as fever are also often milder. This is confirmed by the professional association of gynecologists and the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics: “It is expected that the vast majority of pregnant women will only have mild or moderate symptoms, similar to a cold or flu.”

Breastfeeding is still possible. More than that, it is recommended by the National Breastfeeding Commission. Because there is currently no evidence that breast milk can transmit the virus. Breastfeeding is still recommended, even if you are infected with the coronavirus or if you are reasonably suspected. However, the mother should take special precautions in this case so as not to increase the risk of infection. As usual, wash your hands thoroughly and wear a face mask, of course.
