Coronavirus. Doctors claim lack of supplies; they ask to stop harassment

The ministries of health disclaim their responsibility for their deficient systems in the medical, and the patients blame them for the deficiencies that there are to attend Covid-19, organizations and federations of surgeons from all over the country denounced.

The claim was made in a display addressed to the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, after the arrest of the Chiapas emergency doctor, Gerardo Vicente Grajales Yuca, after the death of one of his patients, who had been hospitalized by Coronavirus 2019 and for whom the hospital where he was being treated had no medications.

The medical federations claimed that they have denounced the lack of inputs to care for their patients, and now they have to face being accused of the death of their patients derived from the lack of those same supplies.

The document was signed by the presidents of associations and federations of General Surgery, Critical Medicine, Internal Medicine, Anesthesiologists, Infectology, Emergency Medicine, Emergency and Disaster, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, Specialists and Residents of Family Medicine, of Plastic Surgery and Orthopedics and Traumatology.

They demanded that the persecution and harassment against the medical staff that are in the first line of attention of the Covid-19.

“To all we must add the concern of being accused by the justice system for attending to people in these conditions, having claimed deficiencies to the point of not having been listened to.”

Yesterday, the Chiapas State Attorney General’s Office released press release 10551, in which it reported that it apprehended the doctor accused of abuse of authority.

The emergency physician worked in the Covid-19 area of the Vida Mejor Specialties Hospital, dependent on the Social Security Institute for Workers of the State of Chiapas (Isstech). The Prosecutor’s Office released the case, published a photograph of the doctor with the legend “Zero Impunity”, and noted that his arrest occurred “in the context of frontal combat against acts of corruption.”

The doctor had asked the patient’s family members to buy medications and supplies to attend to him because there were none at the Hospital Especialidades Vida Mejor of the Social Security Institute for the Workers of the State of Chiapas (ISSTECH). When the man died, his daughter denounced the trafficker.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there have been protests throughout the country, who demand that there are not enough supplies to attend to Covid patients and that both doctors and health personnel have to pay at times with their own resources, their personal protective equipment.

The document signed by the federations and colleges of surgeons described Dr. Grajales Yuca’s apprehension as “violent, abusive and illegal” and pointed out that there has been harassment, stigmatization and intimidation against the doctors, who are criminalized without prior investigation.

“We do not oppose the wrongful professional act being investigated and sanctioned like any citizen, but we do not agree that it is used to delineate other people’s responsibilities of a chronically deficient health system,” they pointed out.

“In this particular case, the fact that the doctor asked a patient’s family member for a certain medicine that was not readily available, does not include it in any crime since saving a life is part of the essence of the doctor.”

The case has led to convictions on social networks and that, for example, this Friday members of the National Front of Health Workers, a dissident union to the National Health Workers, will hold a rally in front of the National Palace to demand the release of the Chiapas doctor.
