Coronavirus: 50 people in quarantine after an outbreak in a restaurant in Lower Saxony

When visiting a restaurant in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony, there are apparently seven people with the corona virus infected. “The infections are probably related to a visit to a restaurant,” said the district. These new cases have resulted in at least 50 people being ordered to take “preventive quarantine at home”. Further test results are still pending. The NDR had previously reported on the cases. Accordingly, it would be the first known cases of this kind since the gastronomy reopened.

As the health authority announced, it was not an isolated case with only a few contacts. “It is an outbreak with several infected people and many contacts at the same time.” Follow-up is now correspondingly complex. The seven positive findings that were related to each other were communicated to the health department from Tuesday to Friday.

In the district of Leer, according to their own information, no confirmed new infection was reported at all for more than a week. As the NDR reported, it was still unclear whether the visitors or the staff would not have followed the rules. District Administrator Matthias Groote warned the citizens of the message: “This outbreak clearly shows us that Corona is not over, the virus can spread anytime.”

The hotel and restaurant association Dehoga reacted dismayed to the case. Due to the hygiene and distance concept that the association had developed, new infections in restaurants are actually not possible, the NDR quoted a spokeswoman. Lower Saxony was one of the first federal states in which restaurants were allowed to reopen. It followed on May 11th the nationwide pioneer Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the restaurants were allowed to open again on May 9th.
