Tokyo reported the addition of 5,042 new cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday (5/8/2021). This figure is a new record since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the Japanese capital, which is currently holding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
With these daily additions, Tokyo now recorded a total of 236,139 cases, accounting for a quarter of Japan’s total. Given, Tokyo has been in a state of emergency since mid-July. There was a ban on the operation of restaurants and bars, but this restriction is now considered relaxed because people are bored.
“We need to address the situation because we now see stronger urgency,” Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said of the first time Tokyo has hit the 5,000 daily cases, quoted by the Huffington Post, Friday (6/8/2021).
“Infections are progressing at a rate that we have never experienced before,” he continued.

Experts at the Tokyo metropolitan government panel warned that the surge in Tokyo’s COVID-19 cases could not be separated from infections of the more explosive Delta variant, causing the addition of more than 10,000 new cases in two weeks.

But now in Tokyo, more than 14,000 patients with mild symptoms are currently self-isolating at home, a more than tenfold increase from last month. Another 8,400 are being treated in specialized hospitals or hotels.
Suga recently issued a new policy, in which patients with mild symptoms are asked to isoman at home. With the aim, hospitals are only allocated COVID-19 patients with serious symptoms.
