Everything should be done to “keep the infection process in check,” she said in Düsseldorf during a visit to NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet. To do this, the “reins” must be tightened – that means “that the rules must be consistently enforced”. Two areas are particularly in focus: the return of travelers from risk areas and private celebrations “where people are carefree with each other”.

There could be no further easing of restrictions at the moment. The development must be curbed, said Merkel. She called on returning travelers to be tested. It is also primarily a matter of observing the distance rules and wearing a mask, for example in public transport. This should be pointed out emphatically. Merkel welcomed the decision of several federal states to impose fines if, for example, mouth and nose protection is not worn on buses or trains.
It is a priority to maintain economic life as much as possible, to secure jobs and to enable schools and daycare centers to be visited, said Merkel.

Laschet: Protect children with stricter restrictions
