But Moderna’s announcement indicates that these studies are making sufficient progress for the company and the National Institutes of Health to prepare for the way forward.
Moderna launched the vaccine test in mid-March with 45 initial volunteers, and the company said it had finished registering 300 young adults in its second phase of the test, and began studying how older adults interact with the vaccine.
These preliminary studies verify the side effects and response of people’s immune systems to different doses, but only the large trial that has not yet been done can show whether the vaccine is successful or not.
Globally, there are approximately 12 potential vaccines for Covid 19 that are in the early stages of testing.
The US National Institutes of Health expects many additional doses to help move into those large-scale final studies this summer, including one from Oxford University. There are no guarantees that any of them will succeed.
But if all goes well, “there will be a possibility of obtaining answers” about the vaccines that operate by the end of the year, said John Maskula, who runs the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institutes of Health, at a meeting of the National Academy of Medicine on Wednesday.
And governments have begun stockpiling hundreds of millions of doses of different candidate vaccines so they are ready to start vaccination once scientists know that one of these vaccines is working.
In the United States, a program called “Operation Warp Speed” aims to have 300 million doses by January.
