Corona prints income for charities, collectors quit

A tour of the NOS among charities that have recently collected, shows that the decline is general. The Dutch Cancer Society expects to have raised at least one million euros less than the usual 6 million euros. The Kidney Foundation sees a decline of about 20 percent, and the Princess Beatrix Spier Fund received more than a quarter less. At the Burns Foundation, the collection result seems to be nearly 30 percent lower this year.

“We see that some collectors would rather not go door-to-door this year because they are afraid of becoming ill or because there are many people from a high-risk group living in their neighborhood,” says a spokesman for the Dutch Cancer Society. The same applies to Alzheimer Nederland: “But we also hear that many collectors have received more generous donations than in previous years.”

The Diabetes Fund has only been able to collect in half of the usual number of municipalities. Also causes such as the National MS Fund and Het Gehandicapte Kind (formerly NSGK) see many cancellations from collectors. “Fortunately, many of them have started to collect digitally”, says a spokesperson for Het Gehandicapte Kind. “About 1800 digital collection boxes have been created.”

‘Home marathon’

Online promotions seem to somewhat close the gap in the income. “We see a shift to online”, says Margreet Plug of Goede Doelen Nederland.

For example, the ALS Netherlands Foundation made an Instagram game as a successor to the Ice Bucket Challenge, and KWF organizes a so-called Home Marathon. In addition, a number of charities collected together, with one collection box. “Charities join forces and work together to continue their work,” Plug concludes.
