Corona-positive nurses are allowed to work in individual cases – SWR Aktuell

There is currently still a ban on working for staff in clinics who have tested positive for the corona virus. That should change now, when they no longer show any typical symptoms.

From July 25th, the Baden-Württemberg state government will allow clinics in cases of staff shortages to let employees work earlier after a corona infection than before. This is possible in individual cases if otherwise on-site care could no longer be guaranteed, the Ministry of Health announced. This is done at the express request of the hospitals. The corresponding Corona regulation will come into force on Monday.

So far, there is a ban on activities

Employees in clinics who have tested positive for the corona virus are currently prohibited from working until the 15th day after the initial confirmation. In the future, however, the clinic management can suspend the ban on activities in individual cases if the employees no longer show any typical symptoms after the sixth day.

However, employees are obliged to monitor themselves for typical corona symptoms and to wear an FFP2 mask, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Ministry of Health reacts to tense situation

With the adjustments, the Ministry of Health wants to react to the currently tense situation in the clinics, among other things. The exemption from the ban on activities should only be used if the on-site supply can no longer be guaranteed due to a lack of staff. In addition, this individual decision is granted to facilities that have a particularly high level of hygiene expertise.

Hospitals are calling for the suspension of facility-related vaccination requirements

The Baden-Württemberg Hospital Association (BWKG) had recently called for the quarantine period for its employees to be reduced and the facility-related vaccination requirement for nursing staff to be suspended. The rule is perceived as unfair in the health sector, said BWKG CEO Heiner Scheffold as a reason. “It was always seen in the context of a general obligation to vaccinate,” said Scheffold. However, these do not exist to this day.

Another problem: lack of skilled workers

According to the BWKG, many upcoming interventions still have to be rescheduled or postponed due to the shortage of skilled workers. After a survey of its member companies, the organization reports that more than 90 percent of them can hardly find any skilled workers. Almost every seventh hospital bed (14.3 percent) cannot be occupied by patients for this reason.
