Corona outbreak in Diemen residential and care center

Thirty clients and residents of the Berkenstede care home in Diemen have become infected with the corona virus. As a precaution, one of the three towers has been completely quarantined and in a second tower this applies at least to the departments where the infections were found.

Berkenstede consists of a total of three towers, with approximately 180 residents and clients. Corona infections have been found in a residential tower and a tower where clients with dementia live. The residential tower is completely in quarantine, visitors are currently not allowed there.

Employees awaiting test result

A spokesperson for the Cordaan healthcare institution said that all staff members who worked in the departments where infections were found have been tested. Some of the results of those tests have not yet been received. It is therefore not clear whether employees are also infected with the corona virus. Most of the infected clients and residents suffer from mild corona symptoms.

The affected wards will be quarantined for at least two weeks and staff will wear protective clothing as a precaution. “It is a radical and resolute decision,” said the spokesman. ‘But we hope to be able to avert the crisis in two weeks, as we did earlier with an institution at the Anton de Komplein.’

Pinches in the occupation

Because Berkenstede staff members are at home awaiting the results of their corona test, it is hindering the staffing of the institution. ‘We do everything we can to get it done, but that is where the biggest challenge lies.’
