Survey: Lower Saxony expect dwindling economic power

07:57 am

After a year of the corona pandemic, a survey shows that people in Lower Saxony are increasingly concerned about the state’s economic strength and the security of their jobs. “The optimism that still prevailed in autumn that companies will somehow get through the crisis has turned into the opposite at the turn of the year,” said Volker Schmidt, managing director of the Drei Quellen Mediengruppe, which commissioned a representative survey from the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy . According to this, 46 percent of those surveyed now expect the economy to continue to decline in the next six months. This means that the population in Lower Saxony has become significantly more pessimistic compared to October last year (36 percent). Only 22 percent currently believed in a positive economic development. As the crisis lasted longer, there was growing concern that a number of companies would not survive. “The psyche of the population is badly damaged,” said Schmidt.

Health ministers advise on vaccination with the family doctor

The federal and state health ministers apparently want to set the exact time for the start of corona vaccinations for general practitioners today. According to information from the German Press Agency, it must be clarified, among other things, how the expected vaccine doses can be distributed among the practices. The bureaucratic effort for general practitioners should be reduced to a minimum. On Monday, the health ministers’ conference agreed on the period at the beginning of April. So far, vaccinations against the coronavirus have primarily been carried out in larger centers in Germany. There are also mobile vaccination teams. Almost eight million doses have been administered so far. This enabled a good three percent of citizens to be fully vaccinated, and 6.4 percent received a first vaccination.

Health insurance companies warn of a billion-dollar gap

According to their central association, the statutory health insurance companies are threatened with a funding gap of billions. The reason is that all reserves will be used up during the corona pandemic, as the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds in Berlin made clear. The chairwoman of the association, Doris Pfeiffer, said: “For this year I am still optimistic that the additional contribution rates will not have to be increased any further.” In the coming year, however, there is a threat of a funding gap in the double-digit billion range. Also because of the corona consequences, the coffers slipped deeper into the red last year. Overall, according to information from Tuesday, a deficit of 2.65 billion euros was reported.
