Physicians fear new restrictions in the fall without compulsory vaccination
After the failure of a general corona vaccination obligation, doctors fear that the pandemic will escalate again in autumn – even to the point of new lockdowns. “The fact is that we have to expect the number of infections to increase again in autumn,” said the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the German Hospital Society (DKG), Gerald Gass, the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. “Politicians must prepare for this today in order to avoid overloading the healthcare system.” Of the Secretary General of the German Immunological Society, Carsten Watzl, explained in the newspaper: “The worst that could happen was no agreement at all.” Considerations for a new attempt at compulsory vaccination would come too late. “A vaccination that would only be decided in the fall would hardly have an acute effect on the upcoming wave, and you would have to take other countermeasures.”
Of the President of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, stated: “Germany will be in a bad position for next fall.” If many more people don’t get vaccinated, “we’ll be talking and arguing about lockdown and contact restrictions again next fall and winter.” On a weekly average, however, only 36,000 vaccinations are currently administered – at the beginning of the campaign there were sometimes over a million. The Doctors Union Marburg League calls for more commitment. “We expect that the federal government will now make every effort to initiate a real media campaign and at the same time increase vaccination education and advice,” said Susanne Johna, chairwoman of the Funke media group.

Germany organizes donor conference for vaccination initiative Covax
Germany is hosting a donor conference for the Covax vaccination initiative together with Indonesia and Senegal today. The virtual conference, led by Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD), is intended to raise funds for corona vaccinations in the 92 poorest countries in the world. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will hold the opening speech, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UN Secretary General António Guterres will also take part.
Since sufficient vaccine doses are now available, according to the German Development Ministry, the conference will focus on logistics. It’s about reaching people in remote villages in developing countries. Investments in cold chains, help with the procurement of syringes or training for health workers are necessary.

No compulsory vaccination in Germany: disappointment among many politicians in the north
After the decision against the introduction of compulsory corona vaccination in Germany, there were different reactions in the population: “Everyone should decide for themselves,” some say. Others believe that everyone should be prepared to be vaccinated. For many politicians from the north, however, disappointment dominated in reaction to the result of the votes in the Bundestag: Lower Saxony’s Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD), for example, said that from her point of view compulsory vaccination was the only instrument to close the remaining vaccination gap in Germany conclude. According to Schleswig-Holstein’s Health Minister Heiner Garg (FDP), compulsory vaccination would have been one way to protect people from severe and very severe courses of Covid 19 disease. Doctors worry about the elderly and the staff in the clinics. They also say: compulsory vaccination could have done a lot better.
