Corona infections and vaccinations in the Netherlands: from hard hit to the middle bracket

For these regions, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) keeps a weekly record of how many infections are detected.

The number of diagnosed infections per 100,000 inhabitants has been calculated in all regions. In the Netherlands, these are the figures per provinces. These weekly figures can be seen in the map below.

Risk levels

Keep in mind that it is difficult to properly compare the number of corona infections in different countries, because countries deal differently with, for example, testing for corona.

In the map, each region is divided into risk levels used by the Dutch government. This way you can see something of the seriousness of the outbreak throughout Europe.

The figures show that the Netherlands was one of the first countries where the second wave of corona infections broke out. At the end of September and the beginning of October, the map of the Netherlands suddenly turned dark red after a quiet summer.

The Netherlands hit hard

During that period, the Netherlands was in pretty bad shape compared to other countries: of the 50 European regions with the most infections, 8 were in the Netherlands. Spain and the Czech Republic were also hit hard at the start of the second wave.

But soon the number of infections increased throughout Europe: by the time Sinterklaas arrived in the Netherlands, almost every region was at the highest risk level (‘very serious’), with more than 250 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

In recent weeks, that peak has decreased somewhat: most of Belgium and Germany have returned to risk level 3 (‘serious’) and the Dutch provinces of Flevoland, Gelderland and Overijssel were also at that level in the most recent figures.

Middle engine

In the latest figures, the Netherlands is a true mid-driver: things are doing better here than in France and Spain, but there are relatively more infections than in Germany, Italy or Denmark.

And actually the same can be said about the vaccination rate in the Netherlands: although vaccination in the Netherlands started slowly, we are now also a nice middle-class driver here.

The vaccination rate in the Netherlands is currently around 1,600 injections per million inhabitants per day. That is slightly higher than the European Union average.

Due to our slow start, the number of people who have already had an injection is still behind the countries around us: 5 injections per 100 inhabitants, compared to an average of 5.5 in the European Union.
