The officially reported number of infected people only refers to infections that have been proven by tests. It is unclear how many people are actually newly infected every day and have been infected so far without having tested positive. Tests for antibodies should clarify this question in the coming months.
The official death toll describes how many people died with the virus. In how many cases the infection was the cause of death cannot be determined from this. When making cross-border comparisons, it must be taken into account that in some cases different criteria are used for recording an infection and for counting deaths.
