8.41 a.m.: GEW is skeptical of the administrative court’s school decision
After the Berlin Administrative Court declared the exclusion of individual grades from alternating classes to be illegal, the Berlin education union GEW fears an increasing risk of infection in schools. “I find this decision very worrying because the incidence is increasing even among young people and educators are little protected,” said the Berlin GEW chairman Tom Erdmann. He was skeptical about the prospect that the 7th to 9th grades could come back. “At the moment it is still so quiet at the schools because there are so few students.”
The education administration must implement the decision of the court, said Erdmann. “And now teachers in schools have to be protected as well as possible, for example through unbureaucratic vaccination offers.” So far, 1000 loops have to be made when allocating vaccination appointments.

After the Berlin Administrative Court ruled that the exclusion of individual grades from alternating classes was illegal, the pressure on the education administration grew. Greens parliamentary group leader Silke Gebel demanded on Wednesday evening on Twitter that Berlin must implement the judgment quickly, “so next week. Presence is important for social interaction & education ”.
A spokesman for the education administration announced on Thursday: “We will now immediately examine the reasons for decisions received on Wednesday evening on these individual cases and then draw the appropriate conclusions as soon as possible.”
According to information from the German Press Agency, the education administration is already holding talks with school management associations, among others, about a possible return of the 7th to 9th grades before Easter.
The administrative court partially granted several urgent motions from students on Wednesday. They wanted to ensure that the classes were fully occupied again. Six out of seven also wanted to enforce that mouth and nose protection is no longer compulsory. The court disagreed on these points.
