Health Minister Heiner Garg (FDP) has sharply criticized the proposal of the Bavarian Prime Minister Söder to introduce compulsory vaccinations for nursing staff, for example.
A classic Söder is that suggestion, said Garg on Tuesday in the studio of NDR 1 Welle Nord. Politicians have promised for weeks that there will be no compulsory vaccination. “It would be a clearly broken promise to pick a single group now,” said Garg. In addition, the proposal cannot be implemented at this point in time – because vaccines are only available for a fraction of the target group.
FFP2 mask requirement in SH? Garg wants to consult with the cabinet
Garg, however, is more open to him Bavarian way of making FFP2 masks compulsory when shopping or in public transport. Garg wants to discuss this with the cabinet. “In my opinion, this can very well be a sensible means wherever minimum distances are not necessarily observed,” says Garg. He did not rule out the possibility that FFP2 masks could become mandatory or urgently recommended for such situations.
Minister proposes emergency vaccine approval to Spahn
Garg again emphasized the basic problem, which will not change anytime soon. So far, a large number of people willing to vaccinate would only face a small amount of vaccine. They share this fate with all other federal states. Should the Astrazeneca vaccine not approved this month, consideration should be given to launching a national emergency approval. This is Garg’s proposal to Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU). “Because I believe that in this particularly difficult situation we have to examine everything that is medically responsible and possible in order to relax the vaccine shortage very quickly,” explained Garg.

He also hopes for further vaccine approvals by the end of March, which could then be produced in larger quantities. Only when the state then has binding delivery promises from the federal government can it pass on vaccination date promises to Schleswig-Holstein residents. So far, the country only knows what vaccine will be available until mid-February. Of course, nobody will lose their right to be vaccinated, stressed Garg.
“Don’t just look at new infections”
After the number of infections could not be interpreted reliably over the Christmas holidays and the turn of the year, meaningful data should be available again at the end of the week. It takes 10 to 14 days to assess the effectiveness of the current measures, says Garg. That is then at least an outlook on how it could develop further and it makes sense for further deriving measures. “I think we shouldn’t just look at new infections. We have to keep an eye on the performance of our medical facilities and take into account the performance of the public health service.”
Nobody has to worry about medical care in the country at the moment. You are in constant contact with the clinics. “But that still presupposes that all Schleswig-Holsteiners show discipline when it comes to contributing to infection protection together. We have to think of those who support us in everything we do take care of, “said Garg.
