After two positive corona cases at HC Zagreb, SG Flensburg-Handewitt’s round of 16 first leg in the Champions League has been canceled. The team of the Croatian champions must be in quarantine.
The Flensburgers should compete in Zagreb on Thursday evening. But the tests on Tuesday showed two positive cases in the Croatian opponent. The rest of the team had to go into domestic isolation. A new date for the first leg of the round of 16 has not yet been set. The second leg is scheduled for the Thursday after next in Flensburg.
Machulla: “We wanted to take the wave to Kiel with us”
“It’s bitter because we would have liked to have played. We were in a good mood and wanted to take the wave with us after the win against Kiel,” said SG coach Maik Machulla to the NDR. He trusts his team, which has meanwhile been in crisis “The team has been doing exceptionally well over the past few months.”
“We have shown that we can handle this difficult situation well.”
SG-Trainer Maik Machulla
The preparation of the Bundesliga front runners was already fully geared towards Zagreb during training. Not a problem for Machulla, however. “Now we simply prepare ourselves for the next tasks with everything we have.” That would be the league game on Easter Sunday (1.30 p.m.) at SC Magdeburg.

And the game against Zagreb? “We hope that we can catch up with the game quickly,” said Machulla. A new scheduling is likely to be a challenge for the European Handball Federation. The Flensburg game plan is packed full of picks, as the Schleswig-Holsteiners were recently in Corona quarantine and Bundesliga games have to be rescheduled.
