If you travel through a non-risk country, you don’t have to be in quarantine today. Even if you actually come from a risk area. The federal government now wants to change that.

In order to circumvent the quarantine obligation, some holiday returnees are tricking: Instead of flying directly back to Switzerland, make a stopover or detour via a non-risk country – and do not have to stay at home for ten days. So far, the only decisive factor has been the country in which the flight took off that took you directly to Switzerland. Previous connecting flights were irrelevant.
–
But now the federal government is reacting. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) announced that Switzerland is adapting its practice in terms of entry requirements for transit flights.
–
The new place of departure is decisive
As of August 31, 2020, air travelers from risk countries can no longer enter Switzerland using a transit pass via non-risk countries. Conversely, air travelers from non-risk countries can enter Switzerland, even if they have to change trains at airports in a risk country, provided they do not leave the airport’s transit zone there.
–
What is now decisive is the countries in which the air travelers who want to enter Switzerland started their flight. Third-country nationals, for example, who come from the USA via Toronto to Zurich, can no longer enter Switzerland from August 31st. This measure is intended to prevent the entry restrictions being circumvented by choosing appropriate transit airports.
–
The same mode is also used in reverse: Air travelers from third countries, who are listed as exceptions in the Covid-19 Regulation 3 – for example Japan, Australia or New Zealand – can also enter Switzerland if, for example, they are in a risk country, for example Turkey, have to change. The condition for this is that you do not leave the international transit zone of the transfer airport, i.e. you do not enter the risk country. (SDA / lha)
