For a long time, the Italians had to do without their beloved “caffe” in the corona crisis – but when the coffee bars reopened there was a disillusionment in some places: The actually sacred price for espresso and cappuccino rose.
Even if one cannot make a uniform judgment, the price in some bars rose by 10 to 20 cents per cup, the consumer protection association Centro Consumatori Italia said.
Italy is proud of its coffee tradition, an espresso at the counter usually costs around one euro. The espresso association said that coffee abroad is much more expensive than in Italy. But this attitude is criticized. “If coffee prices in Italy are lower than abroad, it does not mean that the barista has to raise prices,” said Codacons, an association that also deals with consumer protection.
