After the Christmas holidays and the end of the year, the epidemiological situation cannot be assessed in the same way as for the rest of the year. Because fewer people visit a doctor’s office during this time, fewer samples are taken, and fewer lab tests are performed. As a result, fewer pathogens are reported to the appropriate health authorities. How significant are the current crown numbers?
Experts have long assumed there will be a large number of RKI-unrecorded cases, mainly because by far not all infected people have had a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. Furthermore, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of the individual daily values. Here, too, data comparisons are only possible to a limited extent due to test behavior, late entries or transmission problems. In general, the number of new infections and deaths recorded varies significantly from weekday to weekday, as many federal states do not report them to the RKI, especially on weekends, and report their cases later in the week.
