Corona concert on May 20th – abolition of the mask requirement on buses and trains?

The consultation committee on the topic of Corona was originally supposed to meet on May 6th, but there were scheduling difficulties and a new date had to be set.

One of the most important topics that will probably be discussed then is the abolition of the mask requirement on public transport. Federal Transport Minister Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) is pushing for an end to this requirement on trains, trams and buses and has already discussed the issue with Flanders’ Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters (Open VLD).

As of today (Tuesday, May 3rd), the obligation to wear masks on board the planes of the Belgian airline Brussels Airlines has been abolished. This is probably one of the reasons why this regulation should be abolished in buses and trains. In the health and care sector, however, the mask requirement will remain in place until further notice.

Can the corona barometer “disappear in the drawer”?

Federal Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) had already indicated at the end of April that the corona barometer, which is currently still showing “Code yellow”, could possibly “disappear in the drawer” due to the falling Covid numbers. That would mean that everyone in Belgium applicable corona measures would be suspended.

However, in practice in our country, almost all of these regulations and measures have already disappeared since the government and health authorities switched the corona barometer to “code yellow”. However, from a “technical point of view” the obligation to wear a face mask is not one of the elements of the barometer. This is primarily aimed at culture and leisure, at events and gastronomy, where mouth masks are no longer compulsory.
