KONTAN.CO.ID – KUALA LUMPUR. Malaysia will impose strict movement restrictions in four districts in Sabah, after the state recorded more than 1,000 cases of the new coronavirus during September.

Malaysian Defense Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that as part of efforts to contain the outbreak, non-essential businesses in the Districts of Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kunak and Semporna must close starting Tuesday (29/9) for 14 days.

This partial lockdown is amid a recent spike in coronavirus infections in Malaysia, and concerns over a statewide election ending Saturday will exacerbate the outbreak.

Malaysia reported 150 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 10,919 infections.

“Around 960,000 residents will be affected by the Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO),” said Ismail Sabri, Monday (28/9), as quoted by Channel News Asia.

“Taking into account the number of cases, the government, on the advice of the minister of health, decided to implement TEMCO in these areas,” he said.

During the implementation of TEMCO, all residents are prohibited from leaving the affected areas, and non-residents and visitors are prohibited from entering the four districts in Sabah.

Ismail Sabri said all business activities in the four districts would be stopped except for essential goods and services. Meanwhile medical posts will be established in the area.

All entry points to and from the affected area will also be closed. To ensure full compliance, the Malaysian Police, the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Malaysian Civil Defense Force, the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department, local authorities and authorized personnel will control the area.

“For the implementation of this order, all citizens are asked to remain calm and cooperate fully with staff from (Ministry of Health) and comply with all directives issued by the authorities,” said Ismail Sabri.
