Corona, Brazil: 38 Aboriginal Peoples in the Amazon Affected by Virus – News Abroad

The corona pandemic is spreading ever faster in Brazil. More than 254,220 infections have now been registered, and around 16,800 people have died as a result of Covid-19, the newspaper “Estado de São Paulo” reports. Brazil has overtaken Italy and Spain in the number of infected. The situation is particularly dramatic in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as well as in the Amazon region.

São Paulo – The corona pandemic is increasingly threatening Brazil’s indigenous people. The indigenous Apib association reports that 38 indigenous peoples have already been affected by the spread of the new corona virus in the South American country.

According to Apib, more than 440 indigenous people have contracted the virus, 92 have already died as a result. Accordingly, the tribes in the state of Amazonas, such as the Parque das Tribos, whose chief Messias Kokama died of Covid-19, are particularly affected. Infections have also occurred among the tribes in the south of the country.

According to the non-governmental organization Survival International, the epidemic also ensures that illegal loggers and gold miners “with government backing” are increasingly penetrating the areas of the indigenous people.

The right-wing extremist head of state Jair Bolsonaro is heavily criticized for his corona policy, which negates the dangers. He is accused of downplaying the Corona crisis in his country. In the past, the ultra-right head of state described the lung disease Covid-19, which was caused by the virus, as “little flu”.

Bolsonaro repeatedly criticizes the corona restrictions imposed by the states because of their negative effects on the economy. Due to disagreements with Bolsonaro about dealing with the pandemic, two health ministers have left the cabinet in recent weeks.
