Corona: As of today, you rarely need the pin for contactless card payments

  • As of today, the first customers can pay for purchases of up to 50 euros without entering a PIN, reports “Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft”.
  • Initially, the innovation will take effect at the Hamburg, Kassel, Frankfurt and Munich locations.
  • For security reasons, a maximum of five consecutive payments may be made without entering the PIN and may not exceed a total of 150 euros.

German banks had recently agreed to increase the limit for contactless card payments without entering a PIN due to the corona crisis. The previous € 25 limit is to be increased to € 50 to enable a hygienic payment method.

As of today, the first customers can pay for purchases up to 50 euros contactlessly by card without entering a PIN, reports “Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft”. In order for the new limit to take effect, all software of the card terminals had to be updated. In addition, the money houses had to change their technology accordingly.

Comprehensive changeover is to follow soon

Now all authorization systems are prepared for the new limit. Many dealers have already started the changeover. Initially, the innovation will take effect at the Hamburg, Kassel, Frankfurt and Munich locations. The nationwide changeover should also follow soon.

The current situation has increased interest in this solution. The “DK” therefore assumes that numerous other retailers will switch to the new limit in the coming weeks.

For security reasons, the new EU Payment Services Directive also stipulates that a maximum of five consecutive payments can be made without entering a PIN and must not exceed a total of EUR 150.
