Core i5-10400F and Ryzen 5 3600 in combination with GeForce and Radeon

Among the most expensive processors, the highest gaming performance is provided by the latest Intel processors. Few can afford such expensive whims, so much cheaper processors with Ryzen 5 3600 are still widely recommended. For a similar price, you can buy one of the latest Core 10th generation systems: Core i5-10400F. For the first time in a long time at the price of a 6-core, 12-thread AMD Intel processor offers a very similar layout. We decided to check which one is the better choice, and above all – whether future Radeon holders should be given a different answer to this question than future GeForce card holders.

Core i5-10400F and Ryzen 5 3600 in combination with GeForce and Radeon

We tested eight combinations of equipment: the two processors listed in the factory configuration, and with overclocked and overclocked memory, in combination with the Radeon RX 5700 and GeForce RTX 2060. Instead of one of the most expensive and the most efficient GPU, we chose efficient, but not too expensive graphics cards.

Graphic card or processor test?

Risking betraying you the end of this article, we remind you that the most important decision taken when building a computer to play is the choice of graphics card. Choosing a graphics card is best done on the basis of graphics card tests, which you can easily find by selecting categories at the top of the page. In these articles, we analyze performance in many games, at different resolutions, and sometimes in different scenarios in the same game.

Now you are reading the processor test, in which we focus on which of the two systems – Core i5-10400F or Ryzen 5 3600 – is a better choice for the player, and whether the answer to this question depends on the brand of the selected graphics card. If you have doubts about how to understand the results presented here, be sure to read at least the first, and preferably all three articles from the list:

If you want to see the performance of graphics cards in more resolutions and games, please visit the section graphic cards. If you want to see the performance of processors combined with a much more efficient graphics card, please visit the department processors.

Test conditions

We conducted a performance test using such components:

  • Windows 10 version 2020 operating system
  • MSI Radeon RX 5700 Gaming X graphics card with AMD Adrenalin 20.5.1 drivers
  • Asus GeForce RTX 2060 TUF Gaming graphics card with GeForce 451.48 drivers
  • ASRock Z490 Phantom Gaming 4, UEFI 1.50 motherboard (Intel processor)
  • Asus TUF Gaming B550-Plus motherboard, UEFI 0608 (AMD processor)
  • memory set Patriot Viper 4 Blackout DDR-3200

The memory worked with the fastest manufacturer-supported clock speed in non-twisted configurations, and with DDR-3600 clock in configurations marked as [OC]. On the last page you will find an explanation of why this difference is significant, mainly from a financial point of view.

Overclocked Ryzen 5 3600 worked at 4250 MHz (all cores) – these are very conservative settings; processors bought today have on average slightly better overclocking capabilities, although of course neither the producer, nor the community, nor the Editors guarantee that it will succeed.

Core i5-10400F in the configuration marked as overclocked had memory accelerated to DDR-3600 and energy limits increased to the maximum. This does not change its clock speed in games – the factory clock speed of this processor is relatively slow, and increasing the power limit does not allow it to speed up.

We measured performance using the ETW mechanism, recording the time between successive display commands. The charts present two values: average liquidity throughout the test and liquidity during the worst continuous second of the game time (not 0.1% of the worst frametime!).
