The presentation of the three new functions that will be incorporated into WhatsApp is planned for March of this year; attributes released through a beta version and that will be active for mobile phones, tablets and computers.
With the bet, the developers of the app, owned by the company Meta, intend to maintain their reign, since in the market, other applications such as Google Chat, announced that they will add voice notes and audios in services as popular as Gmail to increase followers.
WhatsApp is the “favorite” platform of Chileans active on social networks, according to the Digital 2023 report carried out by We Are Social and Meltwater. The platform has 93.2% of the preferences of users between 16 and 64 years of age. They are followed by Instagram with 86.6% and Facebook with 86.5%.
“Whatsapp is the only social network that has managed to penetrate the different age groups in Chile and Latin America. The key to its success has been its ease of use and its availability on virtually any device. Instagram and Facebook allow messaging but not with the ease of Whatsapp since they incorporate many more functionalities outside of instant messaging,” says Nicolás Silva, Technology Director of Asimov Consultores, a company that develops mobile apps, software and artificial intelligence for the sector. public and private.
“Other alternatives such as iMessage have not managed to penetrate the Chilean market since it is only available on iPhone phones, which do not have a large market share in Chile,” adds the expert.
New features
The first of WhatsApp’s new features will allow you to set planned events automatically within a community’s information screen. This had already appeared in a previous version, however, less developed. The novelty highlights relevant content for the members of a group, as they will now be allowed to have important information and scheduled events that affect everyone at their fingertips.
Another change is aimed at iPhone users and is related to the activation of passkeys – a type of encrypted key -; These facilitate more secure access without using passwords. Starting with this update, it will no longer be necessary to enter any six-digit code sent by SMS or email – essential today – as it will use facial recognition technology or the terminal’s fingerprint.
Then there is the creation of personalized stickers, which can be obtained by pressing the “stickers” and “+” button; The elements will be displayed in the lower left part of the screen, thus adding all the elements that you want to configure on the “sticker”, subsequently adding them to the conversation.
Silva comments that even though any improvement in terms of security is welcome, passkeys are not going to change much the situation of phishing scams, since authentication via SMS will continue to exist in any case. “As long as SMS authentication exists, that will be the vulnerable point to take over an account,” explains the expert. Also, he adds: “regarding personalized stickers, the iPhone and Android versions already had this functionality. The news is that it will now be available for the Windows version.”
