Convention center becomes field hospital: Detroit Motor Show canceled due to corona pandemic

The largest US auto show in Detroit is also canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. “Even if we are disappointed, there is nothing more important to us than the health, safety and well-being of the citizens of Detroit and Michigan,” said Exhibition Director Rod Alberts in a statement on Saturday night in Detroit. “And we will do what we can to support our community’s fight against the coronavirus outbreak.” The US Civil Protection Agency Fema wants the convention center in Detroit because of the spread of lung disease as Feldkrankenhaus use.

This year, the fair should take place in June take place after the number of visitors and exhibitors had dropped significantly in the past few years at the usual date in mid-January. Automakers were increasingly drawn to the previously held CES Technikmesse in Las Vegas. The trade fair in Detroit is organized by the Detroit region’s auto dealers’ association, but the metropolis is home to General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler as well as the “Big Three” of US car manufacturers.

As in Europe in the plants of Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW, among others, the assembly lines of the car factories in North America are currently at a standstill. Because of the new type of corona virus, the planned internationally important auto shows were already in Geneva (March) and Peking (April) canceled or postponed. (dpa / os)
