Controversy Surrounding Nike’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games Uniforms: Are They Disrespectful?

The American brand Nike is once again in the eye of the hurricane after presenting the new uniforms for the athletics events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

According to Marcathe uniforms have been called “disrespectful” by Lauren Fleshman, former United States 5,000-meter champion, mainly because the women’s uniform resembles a swimsuit, sleeveless and with a high cut in the crotch. However, the brand revealed the uniforms that the teams of several countries will wear, as well as the basketball teams of teams such as Korea, Japan or Spain.

“The amount of attention required towards your pubes to wear something like that and on a world stage, when you’re trying to be carefree and free to push your limits and not be worried about every movement of your body… It’s honestly disrespectful,” Fleshmab said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Colleen Quigley, who competed at the 2016 Rio Games and finished eighth in the 3,000 hurdles, also expressed concern: “Everyone competing for Team USA deserves a uniform that they feel comfortable in, that they don’t have to worry about. have to worry about feeling self-conscious, about putting on your underwear or for having a camel toe [término inglés para referirse a cuando en una prensa ajustada se marcan los labios vaginales]”.

There were voices in favor of the uniforms, such as Tokyo Olympic pole vault champion and Nike athlete Katie Moon, who stated on Instagram: “I want to be clear and start by saying that what was shown on the mannequin was concerning and justified the response that he received. But I’ve also seen people making comments like, ‘Why can’t they just make the men’s uniform for the women?’ I love people who defend women, but we have at least 20 different combinations of a uniform to compete with all the tops and bottoms available to us.’”

John Hoke, Nike’s chief innovation officer, confirmed to the New York Times that the two uniforms presented were just one of several options that will be available to athletes.
