“Controversy Surrounding Netflix’s “Queen Cleopatra” Movie: Accusations of Historical Falsification and Racial Rewrite”

The comic movie released by the American Netflix platform, entitled “Queen Cleopatra”, still raises the ridicule of the Egyptian street, because it shows the black-skinned queen who has ruled Egypt since the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC.

Twitter pioneers attack Cleopatra movie

Yara Abdel-Fattah, one of the pioneers of “Twitter”, criticized the forgery of Egyptian history, using the hashtag “No to Afrocentric”, saying: “It is our history. We do not want this forgery … She was white, Greek, and the Queen of Egypt.”

“They aim primarily to expand their influence in Egypt and then in the rest of North Africa,” said Amin, an Algerian national. “They intend to achieve this by producing their series to spread the idea of Black Africa to influence public opinion after Cleopatra. They may have another goal, like Masinissa the Black.”

Zahi Hawass: The film is a complete falsification of the facts

Former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, confirmed that the film is a complete falsification of history, as Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was blonde and not black.

Hawass indicated, in press statements, that there has been a trend in the world in recent years, led by black Americans and blacks in South America, to claim that the Egyptian civilization is of black origin, stressing that “this talk has absolutely no basis in truth.”

Tareq Al-Shennawy: The film completely ignores the historical truth

Art critic Tariq Al-Shennawy commented on the film, in press statements, that we do not object to the Cleopatra movie presented by Netflix because of the black color of the Queen. We do not care about color, because this completely contradicts the historical truth.

He added: However, these and other objections will end up in nothing, will fade quickly and in the end will remain the official document circulated as the black “Cleopatra” with its African features.

Accusing the producers of racially rewriting history

Critics of the film accused the producers of rewriting history in an ethnic way, as many international newspapers highlighted the racial dispute sparked by the Netflix documentary about Queen Cleopatra.

An online petition demanding the cancellation of the Netflix documentary about Cleopatra, queen of the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt, has tens of thousands of signatures amid accusations of “falsifying history” by casting a black actress in the lead role.

Movie “Queen Cleopatra”

The trailer for the movie, Queen Cleopatra, showed a May 10 release date, accompanied by a description on YouTube that claimed Cleopatra’s legacy has been the subject of so much scholarly controversy that it’s often ignored by Hollywood.

Cleopatra, who was also of Macedonian descent, ruled Egypt for 21 years between 51-30 BC before her death at the age of 39. She spoke Greek as her mother tongue but was the only queen who made sure to learn the Egyptian language.
