Controversy Surrounding Liverpool’s Disallowed Goal in Match Against Tottenham

LONDON – The English Football Referees’ Association admitted a “significant human error” in Liverpool’s disallowed goal after the match of the 7th round of the Premier League between Tottenham and Liverpool.

The incriminating moment took place in the 34th minute, when Luis Díaz opened the score of the match. However, the assistant referee immediately raised the flag. This was followed by an unusually quick check by the video referee, during which the graphic of the calibrated line, which would definitively convict the goal scorer of the offside position, could not be seen on the screen. Still, Díaz’s accurate shot didn’t pay off.

Immediately after the match, the referees’ association, led by former elite referee Howard Webb, issued a statement. “PGMOL notes that a significant human error occurred during the first half of the match between Tottenham and Liverpool,” stands in it.

“Luis Díaz’s goal was disallowed by the referees on the field due to offside. It was a clear and obvious factual error and should have been corrected by the video referee, who did not intervene. PGMOL will investigate the circumstances in detail.”

Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp said after the match that his team lost under “the most unfair circumstances” and because of “crazy decisions”. “When you see it, it’s not offside,” Klopp told Sky Sports about Díaz’s disallowed goal. “The ball is between the legs of Mo (Salah), they drew the calibration line wrong and did not judge correctly the moment in which Mo passed,” added the German coach.

Tottenham won 2:1 after Joël Matip’s own goal in the 97th minute.
