Controversy Surrounding Hungary’s Sovereignty Protection Law Sparks Outcry from Media and Civil Organizations

He shocked the Hungarian nation and quite a few Fidesz propaganda sheets publisher Mediaworks, after the Magyar Lapkiadók Egyesülete (MLE) condemned the sovereignty protection law voted on Tuesday in a resolution.

The association representing the interests of newspaper publishers sent a letter to Katalin Novák asking the President of the Republic not to sign the law that violates the freedom of the press and the freedom of free expression. The Office for the Protection of Sovereignty, established in February, can check anyone who, in their view, violates the country’s sovereignty. Even the media can be included in this circle, since the law does not specify exactly who the new authority can investigate. According to the MLE, all of this leaves the editorial offices vulnerable, and a possible investigation could end the protection of journalistic sources.

After a few hours it was found in the Origón announcement the Fidesz media company. They say that Mediaworks is also a member of the Association of Hungarian Newspaper Publishers, but the resolution was published without their knowledge and approval, in which the president and secretary general of the organization “qualifies the sovereignty protection law adopted by the great majority of the Hungarian Parliament”.

“Mediaworks states that Tibor Kovács cannot carry out such an action without the approval of the MLE presidency, so what is written in the resolution reflects at most the private opinion of him and Katalin Havas, even if they try to get the support of some publishers afterwards. Mediaworks calls on Tibor Kovács to publicly retract the resolution issued on behalf of the association, but not approved by the presidency, otherwise Mediaworks will recall its officials and withdraw from the Association of Hungarian Newspaper Publishers.”

Independent editors (including Telex) and civil organizations also protested against the law adopted on Tuesday. Earlier, the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner asked the governing parties not to adopt the sovereignty protection law, the opposition submitted its own proposal instead, and the American ambassador David Pressman compared the new legislation to the Russian agent law.
